appeared: came into view.

 

The rainbow appeared in the sky after it rained.

 

conductor: a person who is in charge of a train.

 

The train conductor called ‘All Aboard’ before the train left.

 

created: made or designed something.

 

The young girl created a mountain when she painted her picture.

 

imitated: copied the actions or manners of someone or something.

 

The dancers imitated the dance steps that their teacher did.

 

rhythm: a regular beat pattern in music, poetry or dance.

 

The people danced to the rhythm of the music.

 

startled: surprised someone and made the person jump.

 

We were startled by the loud thunder one day when it rained.

soared: flew very high in the sky.

 

An eagle soared up to its nest high in a tree.

 

swooping: flying downward fast.

 

The eagle was swooping down to the ground to catch its prey.

peel: to pull the wrapping or skin off of.

 

We have to peel an orange before we eat it.

cassette: a plastic case with a tape inside used to record or play music

 

The teacher put the cassette tape into the tape player to listen to the songs.

 

companions: people who come along with you or keep you company

 

Grandma and Grandpa have been companions for over fifty years.

 

luggage: suitcases, boxes or carrying cases used by travelers to pack things.

 

The family placed their luggage on the bus before they left on their trip.

 

relatives: people that are part of your family group.

 

Many relatives came to the wedding.

 

sturdy: very strong, made to last a long time.

 

People built very sturdy log cabins in the woods to live in.

cozy: snug, warm, comfortable

 

The little boy was sleeping in his warm, cozy bed.

 

drifted: pushed along by moving water or wind.

 

The sailboat drifted along the lake on the warm summer day.

 

fleet: a group of ships or boats.

 

The fleet of ships sailed across the ocean.

 

launched: caused to slide into the water.

 

We launched our boat from the dock and sailed across the lake.

 

looming: a large and scary figure staying closely around you.

 

The bear was looming over the frightened man.

 

realized: understood, figured out, began to know

 

I realized that the noise I heard was the sound of a train passing by.
