The spelling bee was a great success.

First I would like to thank all of the students. The grade 1 and 2 students all performed to the greatest level and the effort that they all put in was outstanding. The first round put all of the students from grade 1 and grade 2 against each other with the top 4 from each level going into the next round. The goal was to spell as many words as they could in 1 minute. There were huge numbers done by the students and we had to have a "shootout" to get the finalists.

The second round then put 2 students head to head with more requirements added. The students had to spell the word, use it in a sentence and then give the part of speech (noun, verb or adjective) to score full points. Grade 2 went first and it was William IC 2.2 against Brandy from I.C 2.1with Brandy progressing to the final. Then it was Mike from I.C 2.2 up against Jasmine from I.C 2.1 and it was again a very close affair with Mike making the progression. Then it was I.C grade 1's turn. The first semi final saw 2 students from I.C 1.1 going head to head. Howard up against Leo with Howard making it through to the final. The second semi saw I.C 1.1's Edison up against Coco from I.C1.2 with Coco joining Howard in the final. The Grade 2 final saw a great challenge going to 3 words and the slightest mistake from Brandy saw Mike emerge as the winner for grade 2. The grade 1 final also went 3 rounds where it was tight until Coco made it hers. I would like to congratulate the finalists for each grade who did such a great job to make it difficult for the judges. To Mr. Callum, Miss Siobhan and Mr. Len thank you for the effort you put in to prepare and judging the competition. It was a fabulous event and the greatest thanks to all involved.

三四五六年级的决赛安排在了一起,不同的年级不同的内容,却看出同学们相同的学习热情。Mr. George全程参与了比赛的设计、评比和筹备工作,他为中高年级学生的英文拼写水准大声点赞。

Bee Careful, Bee Certain, Bee Quick – it’s the Spelling Bee!

This week we crowned our spelling champions for grades 3-6! The competition was fierce, with all students selected from the first round giving a great account of themselves. I would like to congratulate all the finalists on the effort and skill that they showed, and to thank our audience who came to show their support for their fellow classmates.

After weeks of reviewing and scanning word lists religiously, the time came for Mr. Ben to announce the beginning of the Spelling Bee final. Students would now have to cope with two added pressures; the potential nervousness that comes with being on stage and also the added complication of having to form a sentence. That’s right, students now had to spell their given word and then create a sentence which would be marked for its grammar and its creativity. This meant that students had to double their efforts and they could no longer hide behind just being able to spell – they had to show off!

With the rules explained, our finalists progressed slowly through the rounds. As already mentioned, our students showed their skills brilliantly over two rounds and it was difficult selecting the best to go into our elimination round. 6 students were chosen altogether. Sissy, Stanley, Edison, AC, Helen and York progressed from grade 3 and 4 whilst Wendy, Sarah, Eric, Kelly, Thomas and Joe progressed from grade 5 and 6.

Our deciding elimination round involved a big scary board of difficult spelling words. The idea being that some of these spelling words would be spelt correctly and some would be sneaky mistakes! Students faced head-to-head challenges in which they had to locate and ‘slap’ the word on the board that a judge had announced. This proved a different and fun way that tested students’ reaction times as well as their spelling accuracy.

After some tough competing we had two clear winners who were given trophies as champions of the Moving Dictionary Spelling Bee. Sarah was victorious from grades 5 and 6 whilst Sissy was victorious from grade 3 and 4. We can be very proud of these two excellent spellers and deserved winners, as well as all of our contestants. A final thank you should go to our judges Mr. George, Miss Katie, Miss Eva and Mr. Andrew.
